It’s a time-honored tip to bring on the Z’s that dates back to the 12th century--a repetitive task that was part of the job description for medieval sheep herders required to count their livestock before they fell into a hard-earned sleep under the stars in between Crusades.

Modern sleep research sheds new light on the efficacies of sheep-counting as well as what constitutes a good night’s sleep. Whereas engaging the mind in a repetitive task can help slow down our thoughts, researchers at Oxford University (also founded in the 12th century) found that subjects who visualized running waterfalls and rivers or better yet, did specialized breathing techniques to consciously slow their breath and heartbeat, fell asleep far more quickly than our ancestral sheep-counters.

Researchers have also discovered that though sleep requirements vary to some degree from person to person, most healthy adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to keep up with the demands of our busy days. Children and teens need even more sleep and older adults still need at least 7 hours of sleep.

Research clearly links quality and length of sleep—or lack of it—to productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune system, creativity, vitality and even weight gain.
