96%. That’s right. 96% of all the kids who have been enrolled in Communities in Schools (CIS) drop out prevention programs graduate high school. That’s—give or take—1,248,000 kids nationwide, and growing!
Is it any wonder with results like these that Walker Furniture chose to partner with CIS and help teens in the Clark County School District not only graduate from high school but develop the necessary skills that allow them to use their high school accomplishments as a launching pad to continue to achieve their future academic and professional goals.
CIS is the most successful dropout prevention organization in America. Founded in the 1970’s, CIS works with policymakers, educators, parents and business partners to help K-12 students make it to—and through—college and beyond. CIS coordinators work on site with teachers, families, and students to assess individual student’s needs, deliver the resources that remove existing barriers to academic success and teach behavioral strategies and life skills that are the foundation of an accomplished, productive and happy life.
In 2017, when Walker Furniture learned about the program and its success rate, they got on board. That year, they participated in an upper scholastic competition called ELEVATE YOUR GPA! CIS Juniors and Seniors were challenged to raise their GPA during the school year. The class that demonstrated the most GPA growth during the year won a makeover for their school’s Resource Room—new tables, chairs, couches, bookshelves, and wall art—compliments of Walker Furniture.
Seventeen Valley schools competed in the program in 2017 and Sunrise Mountain School’s Junior Academy won the competition. All the students who participated in the competition elevated their GPA by 20%, and one proud young woman, Shayia Fitzwater, elevated her GPA by 131%! Shayia’s class was honored at a celebratory lunch at Walker Furniture. CIS and Walker Furniture are committed to doing whatever it takes to help kids graduate high school. This means, in some instances, for some kids, providing food assistance for families, advising parents on housing issues, even providing shoes and clothing when that’s what’s needed to keep a child in school.
To that end, CIS sponsors a yearly “Fill the Bus School Supply Drive” to get the community involved in their efforts. Donations of school supplies, backpacks, notebooks and pens, trapper keepers—even tennis shoes, clothing and alarm clocks to help get some kids to school on time—are received at Drop Off Bins at Walker Furniture stores and distributed to students.
