Which mattress is best? Let’s Ask Joe!
Sleep expert Joe Hansen is Walker’s Strategic Account Manager for Serta Simmons Mattresses. We sat down with Joe just before our big mattress sale began and asked him to tell us what he knows about choosing the right mattress for “every body.” Here’s what Joe said:
“The first question we ask our customers is ‘do you wake up with aches and pains every morning?’ If they say ‘yes,’ we ask them if their aches and pains dissipate during the day. If they say ‘yes’, then we know they’re not getting the correct support they need from their mattress."
“Then we ask them whether they sleep on their back, side, or stomach, so when they test-drive a mattress, they try it out in the same position they sleep in. Most people try out a mattress lying on their back. But only 16% of our customers actually sleep on their back. Testing a mattress in the position they sleep in gives them a more authentic experience of whether or not a mattress will work for them at home.”
Let’s Ask a Medical Expert
Dr. Arya Nick Shamie, MD, associate professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at UCLA Medical Center, says your mattress should support your body in a neutral position, one in which your spine has a nice curvature and your buttocks, heels, shoulders, and head are in alignment. "If a mattress is too firm, it pushes on main pressure points and throws you out of alignment. If it's too soft, those pressure points aren’t supported so your whole body flops."
The Big Three: Innerspring, Memory Foam, and Hybrid
If you like a bed with bounce, Innerspring mattresses may be for you. Interconnected coils provide extra-durability, but individual "pocketed" coils, each covered with fabric, reduce the ripple that happens when someone moves around on their side of the bed.
If you prefer a firmer mattress, Memory Foam may be for you. Foam mattresses have several different layers of foam with heavier layers on the bottom for support and lighter layers on the top for comfort. Density and thickness of the foam determine how deep you sink into the mattress.
Memory Foam molds to your body and reduces contact with pressure points. It also absorbs movement, so if you share your bed, you're less likely to be disturbed by the other’s tossing and turning.
Hybrid mattresses are the best of both worlds. An Innerspring base supports a Memory Foam top in what some sleepers feel is the perfect marriage of technologies!
For people who have difficulty getting in and out of bed or who suffer from sleep apnea or acid reflux, adjustable beds bend and elevate at different angles, so your mattress has to be flexible. Memory foam or air mattresses work best though most new innerspring models are adjustable friendly.
So, is it Time for a New Mattress?
All the experts say if you wake up with back pain you can’t get rid of in 15 or 30 minutes, you're sleeping on mattress that has seen its better days. Dust mites and other unseen bed partners that accumulate in a mattress over time exacerbate allergies and impact your sleep patterns. If your bed is no longer comfortable or clean, it's time to do yourself a big favor and buy a new mattress.
