The National Sleep Foundation is celebrating its annual Sleep Awareness Week March 10 -16th, and Walker Furniture’s team of Certified Sleep Experts is awake and ready to help you choose the mattress and bedding that gives you the sleep you’ve always dreamed about! Here’s the science behind Walker’s approach. 

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep, that optimal sleep positively affects our health, well-being, and safety. And we’ve all been on the other end of that continuum: bleary-eyed, foggy-headed, desperately making it through the day on fumes of a get-up-and-go that’s long gone! We power nap. We nod off in a meeting or a movie. We swear we’ll go to bed early tonight, tomorrow, this weekend. But we never seem to catch enough ZZZs to feel genuinely rested.

This year the National Sleep Foundations is providing some impressive tools to help you make good sleep happen: a Bedtime Calculator that helps you plan your sleep according to the recommendations of a panel of experts in the field who reviewed the gamut of scientific literature relating sleep duration to health, performance, and safety. (1) It’s the first time a professional organization developed age-specific sleep durations, and it’s worth taking a look at!

What’s the big deal about sleep, anyway?

Making do with chronic sleep loss is, in real time, a losing game. Quality and length of sleep—or lack of it—effects productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune system function, creativity, vitality, and even weight gain! 

According to a study by the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, nearly 50 million American adults have chronic back or neck pain. (2) Good sleep is also important because as you sleep your body actually repairs and restores itself. 3. In the simplest terms, a good sleep is the foundation of your health and well-being.
