Your Cinco de Mayo Celebration

We're blessed this year with a weekend Cinco De Mayo. If you are planning a party here are some tips on pulling together your event.

Mexican Flag

First things first, What is the celebration about?

Mexico had some outstanding war debts owed to European countries. France came to collect. Napoleon III's army (who hadn't lost a battle in 50 years) attacked Mexico at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In a major surprise, Mexico won the battle, thus - PARTY!

Cinco de Mayo honors our neighbors to the south. Celebrated widely in Mexico, the United States, and even as far away as the Italian island of Malta, it is a day of fun with food, family, and good times.

Color Scheme

This one is easy, match the colors of the Mexican flag, green, white, and red.

Music

Mariachi is the most traditional, but here are the top 5 Latin Pop Songs of all time as rated by billboard.com and a link to more if you want to branch out in your musical choices.

  1. "No Me Doy Por Vencido," Luis Fonsi
  2. "Bailando," Enrique Iglesias Feat. Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona
  3. "Ginza," J Balvin
  4. "Me Enamora," Juanes
  5. "Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor," Juanes

The Food

Traditional Mexican cuisine is a staple of Cinco de Mayo Celebrations. Tacos, salsa, guacamole, tortilla chips are all delicious, and perfect for this type of celebration.

Interesting Factoid: The Town of Puebla, Mexico (where the battle with Napoleon took place) has become a Foodie Haven.

The Beverages

Have a beer tasting! Mexican beers you may want to try to include Bohemia, Negra Modelo, Victoria, or Corona Familiar. Note: Corona Familiar comes in a dark bottle and many swear it is a much better taste than its sister in the clear bottle.

Jarritos is a popular Mexican soft drink that comes in 15 different fruit flavors and is less carbonated that traditional U.S. soft drinks. Drinking Jarritos is a habit that you may choose to continue year round. Also, have you tried Mexican Coke? It is sweetened with pure cane sugar as opposed to high fructose corn syrup. This writer believes it is the way Coke was intended to be sweetened.

The Setting

Patio furniture is key if your soiree will be held outdoors. With hot summer afternoons in Vegas, a night party may be the best idea. Outdoor furniture has come a long way in the last few years. New collections found at Walker Furniture even include fire bowls and pits to lend to the party atmosphere.

If you bring the party indoors, make sure each seat has a place to rest a drink and plate. Occasional tables are multi-functional and help complete any room.

Turn your dining table into a grand buffet. Guests can help themselves and the host can relax and enjoy the party.

The Invitation List

People you love. The Mexican culture honors family. Your party should too.
